DaVo's Punk Christmas Playlist

DaVo's Punk Christmas Playlist

Every Christmas my family gathers around the tree and out comes those tired old beaten worn out Christmas songs. I'm sure my sister thinks she is putting us all in the Christmas mood but you think after 30 years of my annual groan escaping my month as the latest discount department store Christmas song pour out of those tortured speakers, she would have given up. Over the years there has been just about every form or style of music played to test my Christmas spirit and general awful music tolerance level.

20 Skate Rock Songs

20 Skate Rock Songs

If you went to Hardcore Punk shows in the 80s, it went without saying that there would be a few Skateboards rolling around outside. Both hardcore Skating and hardcore Punk had gone through the same transition around the same time so it isn't a surprise that both hitched a ride with the other. They not only shared a birthday but location. Evolving out of the Suburbs and cities of Southern California. It is safe to say that they share the same aggressive gene and roots. As many of the early Hardcore Punks came from a surfing and skating background.

DaVo's Labor Day Playlist

DaVo's Labor Day Playlist

It's been a while and I'm kind of being lazy because this is a list that I created a year ago but I don't know any better way to celebrate Labor Day then to share this list.

20 Dangerhouse Records Songs

20 Dangerhouse Records Songs

For this installment of my Spotify blog, I'm continuing with my Label series and this label is possibly  the most important Punk labels to come out the U.S. I say this not only because it is one of my favorite labels but because the label documented a scene and point in time that would do more to shape the punk and hardcore scene that would come after. When you trace back the roots of modern punk the trail almost always leads back to Southern California, DC and maybe Boston.

Often when I make playlists they tend to be either by style, location or band. Other than the one's that I post a majority of these are huge long lists Of hundreds of songs. In part this is because I will listen to them at the studio and an hour long list playing over and over gets a bit boring. I used to do the same thing with singles and EPs back in the day of cassette tapes and one of the things I used to do was pick a label and create a tape out of that labels material. Often this could create some rather odd combinations but some out comes were some of my favorite mix tapes.

20 Posh Boy Records Songs

20 Posh Boy Records Songs

Back in the dark ages, long before the invention of the digital audio files and the instance gratification of obtaining information and music on the net, there were a number of small regional independent labels that documented and shaped music. Often these "Labels" were extreme small, not well run and often prayed off the artists on there label. Posh Boy was one of those labels and regardless of missing royalties, gun play and countless other shady business practices, it documented many of the most important and influential bands coming out of the LA area in the late 70s and early 80s.

21 Irish Songs

21 Irish Songs

With Saint Patrick's Day this Saturday, I figured I post a list of some of my favorite traditional and punk covers of traditional Irish Songs. When of the main reasons is that St Pat's is supposed to about celebrating Irish Culture and a day of reflection on how far Irish Americans have came. Also it is about how much Irish culture has shaped the American Experience and maybe the greatest gift has been it's music. Especially the uses of music to voice cultural and political messages.

When Punk was developing in the dark days of the mid 70s there was a style that defined it. Sure there were many exception and in a way that was what made it then and continues to but there was a simple, stripped down style that gave nods to both the Rock n Roll of the late 50s and early 60s. A time when the music was not only dangerous but often at its most pure and entertaining state. This sound defined many of the first generation of punk including the pre-punk New York Dolls.

Naked Raygun - Singles Series

Naked Raygun - Singles Series

It's been a while since I published a Spotify playlist but in my defense I've been a little busy with the Underground Archives. What sparked me to post one today was the long awaited installment of the third single in the Naked Raygun Singles Series.

Growing up in the Midwest a majority of the punk bands that I first discovered where from really exotic locations like Los Angeles, New York or the UK. It was easy to fill somewhat detached and out of place because those places seemed so distant.
