Cowpunk

I was sitting at Lefty's a few weeks back and the subject of the upcoming show with the Wood Chickens came up and I said, "They're Cowpunk." This brought more than a few blank stares from those around me. A few of which I knew were fans of Nine Pound Hammer, Hank III, and the countless modern versions of Cowpunk. Yet this term meant not a thing. So, I moved on to naming bands, Blood on the Saddle and Tex and the Horseheads first came to mind followed by the Knitters. still nothing.

DaVo's Best of 2016

I know it's a few months late but I wanted to create a list of my best of 2016. What is include is more of a representation of music that I felt stood out. There is a lot of music from bands and artist that just aren't on Spotify. What this collection is either from Albums released in 2016 or new bands that I was exposed to 2016. I'm sure I missed a few but here is a good overview of my musical life in 2016.

Punk Rock's Radio - The Compilations Part 1

Let me put on my old man hat for a minute, OK, Uggchaakosdsem, right, back in the years before the internet and before punk rock was played the radio, you had to seek out music. You couldn't sit on the couch and let it come to you, like a hunter gatherer you had to get out there into the wilderness and dig, prod and generally take chances. Even those that were in the know, rarely had heard the records they were seeking. Maybe they had a clue based on other things the band had put out or maybe one of the guys was in this band or that.

The New Sounds Of Punk

If you would have asked me 30 years ago that I'd be writing a blog about the latest punk release in June of 2017, I would have first asked, "What the hell is a blog?" and then dismissed it because everything that could be Punk, had already been Punk. Yes, that would have been 1987 and in a lot of way I really felt the whole thing had ran it's course. Further more I wouldn't have in my wildest dreams be including new music from TSOL and the Descendents because they had broken up.

Midwest Monsters

Maybe we are just born with that chip on our shoulder or is it something that grows with the passing time. Rocks and gravel that is easily flown over and well off the beaten path of the hippest rats on the sinking ship that make up the left and right arm pits of America. Yes, we were monsters, oddities, freaks that came from the most surprising places. Some of them planted the flag and throw down the gantlet, while others begged, borrowed and sold to enter a forced march to the coast were they shaped their adopted home in ways the locals were unable. These were the Midwest Monsters.
